Orthopedic Tree I

  • The traditional symbol of orthopedics is a bent tree that has been braced to grow upward and straight.

This digital collaboration with Tony Dungan involves magnifying, adding, and subtracting shapes and colors using orthopedic implants. The piece combines various porous surfaces of the acetabular component (the cup) used in hip replacement. Bone grows on the surface of the implant, providing biological fixation.
